Steel parts are heated to carburizing temperatures in a sealed vacuum furnace. Carbon is introduced using controlled hydrocarbon gases that dissociate at the part surface, allowing carbon to diffuse into the steel. After carburizing, parts are quenched, followed by tempering to achieve the required hardness profile and mechanical properties.
