Neutral Hardening

Neutral hardening is used to increase the hardness, strength, and wear resistance of steel components, while preventing unwanted surface chemistry changes. Parts are heated to their austenitizing temperature in a protective, neutral atmosphere, minimizing oxidation and decarburization. Parts are then quenched to achieve the desired hardness and mechanical properties.

How Neutral Hardening Works

Steel components are heated uniformly in a tightly controlled neutral or inert furnace atmosphere. This atmosphere protects the surface from reacting with oxygen or excess carbon during heating. Once the target temperature is reached, parts are then quenched to form a hardened microstructure. Tempering is then performed as required to balance hardness and toughness.
